My favorite Real Food shortcuts, storing tips, subs for food allergies and more!
These come in your weekly meal plan PDF but I wanted to post them here for everyone to be able to access.
Storing Tips
Tomato Paste - If you can’t find a tube, measure remaining canned tomato paste into 2 tbsp mounds on a parchment covered plate or small baking sheet. Freeze then store in Ziploc or silicone bag.
Chicken Broth – Freeze in ice cube trays (the large silicone ones are great and about 1/3 cup)
Wine – Freeze the same as chicken broth
Onions – Wrap halves or quarters in parchment or plastic wrap and store in well sealed bowl to avoid flavors leaching out. I prefer snaplock bowls.
Extra chopped veggies – store in a glass storage bowl and use within a week.
Shortcuts
Zucchini Noodles - Use spiralized zucchini found in produce aisle. You will need to throw them into a very hot large skillet for only 1-2 minutes rather than stirring them into sauces cold.
Chopped Onions – Look in Produce Department for pre-chopped onions
Minced Garlic/Ginger – Find frozen cubes by Doret (or other brands). 1 cube = 1 tsp
Chicken – Buy a rotisserie chicken and shred. You will need one for each chicken recipe.
Rice – Buy precooked Jasmine rice
Budget Friendly
Cheese – buy a block and shred
Lettuce/Cabbage – buy a head and shred or chop
Carrots – buy whole carrots and shred on large holes of grater, julienne with julienne tool or cut into sticks
Dairy Free
Butter - Miyokos Plant Based Cultured Butter
Shredded Cheese - VioLife Plant Based cheese
Cream Cheese or Ricotta - Kite Hill Almond Milk based cheeses
Sour Cream - Kite Hill or Violife
Yogurt - Forager
Greek yogurt - CocoJune
Grain Free
Tortillas/Tortilla Chips – Siete Brand for both. My favorite tortilla variety is Cassava Coconut tortillas which are very much like flour tortillas.
Crackers - Simple Mills has several varieties including cheese, salted and even a graham cracker sub plus a few others. I haven’t found a variety I don’t like. Whole, real food ingredients.
Vegan/Vegetarian
Use Chopped Chik’n or Ground “Beef” from Abbot’s Butcher in place of ground meat or shredded chicken
